What future holds for broadband

Web developers, clairvoyants and governments all share something in common. If you're in Gateshead on May 17 then, chances are, you'll meet two out of the three and untangle the thread.

To the baby-boomer generation, the internet has a mystique – an enemy far more threatening than communism or sexual promiscuity.

For a child raised during the Blair era, the internet is an extension of their lifestyle. For some, it is their lifestyle.

For business, it’s a facilitator, an accelerator and a tool of engagement. But what impact will it have in the future? And, more importantly, how will it affect business?

Whilst there are no definitive answers, a panel of future gazers, compulsive technicians and business leaders will route their views in a dedicated event, Future of Broadband.

Codeworks are driving the day as part of the Sunderland Software City initiative. NorthernNet, itself a partnership between the triumvirate of North West Development Agency, Yorkshire Forward and One North East, is a sponsor with a vested interest in super-charging business and communication in the North, with support coming in the form of Northern Way.

The evening will start off with a look under the hood of Next Generation Access and conclude with a panel-based Q&A chaired by the evening’s host, Brian Condon, partner in Complexity Groups LLP and board member of Community Broadband Network.

Houston Spencer, vice president Alcatel-Lucent North Europe is keynote. Houston has assisted telecoms operators internationally and has written and spoken extensively on the unprecedented competitive dynamics transforming the industry.

Taking advantage of future technologies is a challenge for small companies, especially while weathering the current financial storm. Thankfully, exhibitors such as CISCO will be on hand to share their forecasts for the future.

North East-based development agency Vector76 will be showcasing the Sunderland Software City (SSC) Tower, a virtual office space within the virtual world, Second Life. The tower is divided into 10 office suites that can be branded and used to give SSC-associated companies a foothold in the rapidly emerging 3D internet.
