Fund To Develop Digital Communications

Businesses across the UK are being challenged to team up and develop innovative ideas that will improve the internet and digital communications.

On 14 June, innovation agency the Technology Strategy Board will launch their new £18 million Collaboration Across Digital Industries competition.

Over the next year, 50% funding will be available for collaborative projects that aim to tackle at least two of the following fundamental challenges:

  • People.
  • Digital content and services.
  • Networks.

The competition is open to collaborative bids from all relevant UK businesses and research organisations.

Two types of project can be supported:

  • Strategic development projects with the potential to cause substantial and lasting change in internet-related industries.
  • Ground-breaking trials that will use the UK Digital Testbed (scheduled to be live by the end of 2010) to contribute to a "vibrant ecosystem" that fuels innovation and attracts consumers.

In addition, these two types of project can be either fast-track (total cost less than £100,000 and lasting for up to a year) or mainstream (total cost over £100,000 and lasting for 1-2 years).

Fast-track applications are made using a single stage process and must be submitted by 22 July.

Mainstream projects are submitted via a two-stage process – expressions of interest must be made by 19 August, with shortlisted bidders given until 4 November to complete a full proposal.
