Be Enterprising event to encourage businesses

SOME of the North East's leading support agencies are joining forces to encourage people into taking the first steps to being their own boss.

Potential entrepreneurs are being invited to attend SOME of the North East's leading support agencies are joining forces to encourage people into taking the first steps to being their own boss.“Be your own Boss” event next month.

The programme, which has recently won another £4.1m of European funding, aims to boost enterprise in County Durham’s former coalfields and rural communities.

There will be advice on hand from groups including Be Enterprising. Jobcentre Plus, SASDA, Shaw Trust, Inbiz and Darlington College.

Dawn Huntrod, Be Enterprising coach said: “This fair will give people the opportunity to come in and find out everything about starting a business.

“We want to help people realise that they have what it takes to run their own successful business. Even if they just have an idea, we have an ideas generation corner where people can go and discuss their business idea and find out there and then what support can be offered to them.

“Our aim is to give local people a closer look at support available and see the journey from an idea to a business. Some past clients who have recently set up their own businesses will also be on hand to offer their expertise, share their experiences and maybe make some sales.”

One client attending is Lorraine Lax of Beautiful Brides in Spennymoor. She said: “I wanted to do something that I really enjoyed, I already made dresses as a hobby but it didn’t occur to me that I could do it full time. When I looked into starting my own business, the more I looked, the more confident I became that I could do it. Be Enterprising supported me throughout the entire process, I was given a business coach who helped me with my business plan and a start-up grant that helped me buy everything I needed to get the business up-and-running.

“It’s great being my own boss, I love it, and it is definitely something that is worth looking into.”

The event is due to take place at Newton Aycliffe Youth Centre from 10am – 4pm on July 20 and 23.
