SINGLE mother Katie Richardson has launched her own dog grooming service with help from business support service Be Enterprising.
The Stanhope entrepreneur received support from the Enterprise Coaching project in setting up her Bishop Auckland salon Stanhope Proud Hounds, which is already booked up for two weeks.
She said: “I offer all grooming services; cutting coats, grooming, bathing and nail clipping. I also give all dogs I groom a quick once-over to see if there are any skin issues or anything that may require veterinary treatment.
“I heard about Be Enterprising through Barking Mad Pet Supplies where the business is based. They also received support to get their business started.”
The 30-year-old was previously unemployed and caring for her two-year-old daughter before setting up her business. She said: “My daughter is registered disabled so since she was born I have been her full-time carer. Prior to my daughter being born I worked with animals and I have always had dogs.
“I am a fully-qualified dog groomer and also have NVQ level one and two in small animal care. I have worked at catteries, kennels, veterinary surgeries and groomers.”
The Be Enterprising programme, which was set up to revitalise the County Durham business community, has recently been awarded another £4.1m from the European Union Regional Development fund. Since 2006, it has helped people in the area set up over 1,000 new businesses.
Katie’s Be Enterprising coach, Douglas Palarm said: “We worked with Katie to develop a detailed business plan and were also able to award her a grant that helped pay for essential equipment to get her business up and running.
“With Katie’s experience and dedication I am sure that her business venture will be a success.”
